What is Christianity?
"If ever the divine appeared on earth, it was in the person of Christ."
--Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
The Bible never uses the word Christianity, although we probably need to as a way of describing what it means to follow Jesus. A Christ-ian is literally a 'little Christ' or 'Christ-one,' the idea being someone who has so bound up their allegiance and destiny with Jesus Christ that He becomes their life, his past their past, his present and future their present and future. As the Apostle Paul says "I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but
Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by
faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me." And living by faith the in Son of God is the heart of the Christian faith. Not faith in Jesus as a great teacher or guru, but as the unique Son of God, the Creator and therefore absolute master and redeemer of our lives, the only mediator between the living God and humans. Christianity says the divine has appeared on earth, and it was in the person of Christ. In fact, if Jesus was not God in human flesh Christianity is shattered, because the Christian faith is built on the historicity of Jesus' unique life and meaning-laden death, and on the eyewitness accounts of his resurrection from the dead as the divine Son of God. His one life has defined history and civilization. To find out more, read this then come see for yourself.
