our story
Knowlton Presbyterian Church began in 1766 in what was then the wilderness frontier of northwest New Jersey, near what is now called the Delaware Water Gap. In those early years our area was the place pioneer missionary David Brainerd lived for years among the Native American Delaware tribe. Located a mere 60 miles from New York City, we are today an exurban reformed church with roots in and a resolve to continue centering on the gospel. We are progressive in ministry with partners such as a K-12 fine arts homeschool co-operative; a women's crisis center; community development in Africa; theological education and church planting in Asia; international disaster relief in the middle East; and church planting and leadership development worldwide. Knowlton has planted three daughter churches in our history, and is expanding once again with a Christian Community Center. We wholeheartedly embraces the orthodox Christian faith as expressed in the Apostle's and Nicene Creeds. As a reformed church our roots go back to and through the Protestant reformations of the 16th century, and as presbyterians have done we subscribe to the clear and rich description of biblical Christianity in the Westminster Confession.Knowlton is a growing and diverse church family of artists, educators, businesspeople, professionals, tradeswomen and men, civil servants, mothers, fathers, children--all discovering that underneath the misconceptions and media circus there is a Christianity that is refreshingly clear, deep, life-giving and outwardly focused. We run the spectrum of the committed, curious, and just investigating; and we open wide our doors to you whatever you are in regard to faith. So if you are searching for a credible, honest, and compelling faith, or if you wonder if God really exists and can be known--then Knowlton may be the place for you. We invite you to join us.
