Be Loved
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life.
-- Gospel of John 3:16
Our love is a spontaneous response to all God in Christ has done for us, expressed so well in this poem of the great 16th century Jesuit missionary Francis Xavier.
Thou, O my Jesus, Thou didst me
Upon the cross embrace;
For me didst bear the nails and spear,
And manifold disgrace.
And grief and torments numberless,
And sweat of agony;
Yea, death itself, and all for me
Who was thine enemy.
Then why, O Blessed Jesu Christ,
Should I not love thee well?
Not for the hope of winning heaven,
Nor of escaping hell;
Not with the hope of gaining aught,
Not seeking a reward;
But as thou has loved me,
O ever-loving Lord!

Come find the love that meets us all in our suffering, loneliness, and trouble, since in Christ's name this love is offered to you as well!
